Traffic
An operating session is one of the highlights of the Norfolk & Whey. The first operating session took place in November 2006 handling about twenty train movements. Currently, a typical operating session includes the following movements:
-
nine through-trains operating across the entire mainline between Bluefield and Williamson;

An Amtrak Special proceeds east on the mainline near Hoops, while a local
heads to Lomax on the Dryfork branch overhead. Meanwhile, an empty coal
train arrives at Black Watch Mine #2 on the Morri Branch. - two empty coal trains from Williamson terminating at separate mines;
- six coal trains traversing the route to or from Iaeger Yard and a power plant at Grundy via one of the branchline coal mines;
- one grain train operating in each direction from Bluefield to Mudlick via Iaeger;
- four locals operating out of Iaeger to handle online industries; and,
- a helper unit working out of Iaeger.
Typically, eight operators handle the all of the train movements. Crews operate multiple trains during the session.
